Rigby Star Toolbox

Rigby Star - helping you embed Assessing Pupil Progress (APP)

This section of the Rigby Star Toolbox provides you with resources aligned to Assessing Pupil Progress (APP) - the structured approach for periodically assessing reading, so you can:

  • track pupils' progress
  • use diagnostic information about pupils' strengths and weaknesses.

The resources you will find here have been developed to give you 'just the right amount' of material. APP is about reviewing work in the day-to-day lesson, it is not a new assessment event. For that reason, these resources can slot into your everyday reading practices.

You will find three types of assessment resource here:

  1. Running Record sheets : These are sheets which help you gather evidence on how well a pupil can read independently. They are perfect for gathering AF1 evidence and can be used in your periodic one-on-one reading assessment. [Scroll down to download these sheets.]
  2. Levelling Guidance sheets : These are sheets which help you gather evidence against specific Assessment Focuses (AFs) during guided reading lessons, and exemplify different levelled answers for easy-transfer to the Reading Assessment Guidelines (the grid filled in for each child - part of the APP approach). [Scroll down to download these sheets.]
  3. Assessment Focus charts : These charts enable you to see the learning objectives for every Rigby Star book, and which AF evidence can be gathered by using that book. [Click on the top button to access these charts.]

Guided Reading - perfect for periodic assessment

These new assessment resources have been developed to support the existing Teaching Versions which come FREE with the Rigby Star Guided reading packs. There is a Teaching Version for every title and they contain a whole range of questions for every page of the Pupil Book. The 'Observe and Prompt' questions provide opportunities for gathering evidence against a range of AFs. The Rigby Star Guided Teaching Versions make guided reading the perfect way for periodically assessing your pupils' reading.

Running Records - perfect for AF1

A running record provides evidence about how well a pupil can independently read - revealing the reading strategies the pupil is using and giving diagnostic information about a pupils' reading strengths and weaknesses.

There are two Running Record sheets linked to Rigby Star Guided titles for Book Bands Yellow to Lime. There are no Running Record sheets for Pink and Red books since these books do not always offer sufficient text for 50 running words to be assessed.

Levelling Guidance sheets - perfect for TAs

These sheets have been developed by Anne Derry, a Primary Strategy Consultant implementing the APP process, and so are ideal for using within existing guided reading practices. Simply print out a sheet that matches the book you are using and, for certain Teaching Version questions, record the answers you receive from the group. These answers are linked to various AFs, helping you to transfer this evidence straight on to the Reading Assessment Guidelines .
