Case Study - Priory Common School
"What I like about this material is that it teaches a strategy, then, straight away, puts it into real-life context. It's important for children to make these links - it enhances their learning power.
Using the number line
I wanted to introduce the bead bar and number line idea into my school - as this is an effective model and provides an image for the children to use - Go Maths is helping me do that. The resources give teachers who know a bit about the number line something to hang it on. It takes one consistent model for the whole school and provides us with enough material to use it.
Mathematical Language
We're also using lots of mathematical language. The language helps us explain things more easily. I've even enhanced the language I use, and now their mathematical language, and understanding of it, is wonderful.
Gives children confidence
You are able to pick out what suits your class - it's easy to link the step above and the step below. It keeps the whole class working on the same objective, but at the right level for them. You don't have to push on to the next session - you can make sure children have understood. Go Maths particularly allows lower-ability children to gain confidence - the strategies and physical equipment give them something to grasp onto.
The material gives you plenty of ideas of how to approach things from a different angle if the children haven't got it; for example, there are plenty of opportunities to make it more practical.
We're really enjoying teaching the programme - we love the way it all fits together."
