Harrogate High School Case Study
Case Study - Harrogate High School, North Yorkshire
Harrogate High School in North Yorkshire is a comprehensive school with more than 1,000 pupils aged 11-18. It has an extended Key Stage 4 to allow for a flexible curriculum that personalises each student's learning. There are about 300 pupils at Key Stage 3 in Years 7 and 8, and the Science Department was recently fully refurbished at a cost of over £650,000.
With the new KS3 curriculum starting in September, Harrogate High School evaluated four new KS3 science courses before choosing Go Science! as their new course for 2008. Anne Saul, Key Stage 3 Co-ordinator, explains why Harrogate High School selected Go Science!...
At Harrogate High School we evaluated four competing new KS3 science products. Our evaluation team consisted of two members of staff and some Year 7 classes. We gave each group the old KS3 scheme and the four new KS3 courses. The final result was that Go Science! is best suited to our students and their needs.
Plenty of evaluation material
-
Evaluation materials were available early with enough material for a thorough evaluation, and for us to begin preparation for September.
Offers differentiation and levelled questions
-
Go Science! provides differentiated materials. Levelled questions are clearly indentified on each page of the Pupil Book - we have discovered that our students are very competitive and wish to improve - where there is an opportunity for this they really rise to it.
Visually exciting
Each page in the Pupil Book is really inviting. Not too much reading, and lovely photographs which are unusual and not the typical photos found in textbooks generally.
Interactive software
LiveText - we already use a similar product and our students react well to interactive activities.
Online Assessment
-
Online Assessment is very engaging. We expect it to be a popular form of assessment.
Teacher Resources
-
Teacher Planning Resources - excellent starters and the weblinks are very useful.
"What really stands out for us in Go Science! is the format of the pages and the clearly levelled questions. A good package, appropriate for our students and we look forward to our students making pizza cells!"
