Word Cards

Word cards are used to help children read independently. Within your Bug Club Phonics subscription, take your pick from over 800 word cards including: real words, pseudo words, high frequency words and irregular words. We have created one version of these cards with sound buttons and one version without.

Real Words

One version of these cards in your subscription is marked with dots and dashes to denote where the single letter sounds, digraphs and trigraphs are in a word. Children learn to recognise each grapheme and blend to make the word.

Irregular and High Frequency Words

The irregular cards contain words that have irregular pronunciations; these words are always deemed ‘tricky’, e.g. ‘one’. However, some of the words in the list have regular pronunciations and become fully decodable later as the phonics teaching progresses; for example, ‘like’ becomes completely decodable when split digraphs are taught.

When reading these words, children should be encouraged to use their phonic knowledge to help them decode them as far as possible. The irregular part of each word is denoted in blue so children can recognise this to help them read the word.

We have also included high frequency words.

Pseudo Words

These cards are made-up words that don’t mean anything. They are used to help children practise their decoding skills. One version of these is marked with dots and dashes to denote where the single letter sounds, digraphs and trigraphs are in a word. Children learn to recognise each grapheme and blend to make the word.
