Bug Club Plays to Act

Plays to Act

Plays to Act is a top selection of six well-known, child-favourite stories, especially adapted to be performed by class-sized groups of KS1 pupils.

Designed to encourage pupils to step inside a role, rehearse and perform to their peers, the popular picture books, which have been transformed into illustrated scripts, include tales including from the award-winning creator of The Gruffalo, Julia Donaldson.

The Plays to Act series also offers scope for children to design tickets, experiment with costumes and lighting, and play with the design of staging to maximise inclusion for pupils who aren’t as keen to step on to centre stage.

How the Plays to Act work

  • Each play can be performed by whole-class-sized groups, supporting playtime, communication and collaboration, while also building fluency and confidence.
  • Fun storylines, illustrations and characters boost engagement and enjoyment around acting, and during rehearsals.
  • The plays are designed to capture the interest of pupils who don’t typically engage with reading-based activities.
  • Use of well-known stories enhances the sense of familiarity and excitement.
  • Rhyme, rhythm and repetition encourage fluent expression, and help learners memorise lines.
  • A variety of speaking parts in each play maximises inclusivity, and enables children to see peers in a new light – as keen actors-to-be.
  • Colour coded content helps pupils stay on track and confidently play their part.
  • The plays can be performed within schools and assemblies, introducing learners to the basics of public speaking in a supported, child-friendly way.
  • Plays also provide scope for enjoyable non-acting activities, including set design, for pupils who don’t wish to perform.
