We’re powering up Power Maths!

We have partnered with White Rose Maths to develop updated Power Maths print and digital resources for Years 1–6, fully aligned with the new White Rose Maths schemes of learning and taking on board teacher feedback to make key improvements throughout.

Updated Wednesday 10 January 2024.

Summer 2022

Individual Practice Games now available in Power Maths for Years 1–6.

These arcade-style games will boost maths confidence and embed key number facts and skills. They include Support, Core and Extend levels, as well as simple reporting for teachers and rewards for children. Games can be completed in school or at home!

This is all shown in our fun animation!

You can view the digital Textbooks and Practice Books (extra subscription required) ahead of the new term in ActiveLearn Primary. These are available now for Years 1–6 (click the 'Resources 2023–24' tile from the Power Maths homepage). Also available now are other supporting resources (e.g. Teacher Guide units).

  • a quick reminder about the aim of this section of the lesson

  • a reflection task prompting teachers to plan what they will do differently in their next lesson.

Autumn 2022

If you've ordered Term A new Textbooks and Practice Books for Years 1–6 these should be delivered by Wednesday 7 September which should minimise any impact from potential postal strikes at the end of August and early September. Please note that your September order will contain Term A only. Term B and C will be arriving to you later.

Schools not intending to use the updated version of the White Rose Maths schemes can buy and use the current editions of the Power Maths books as they do now.

Teacher Guides are available for the first few units for each year group. Teacher Guide units and answer files will be added throughout the term, in advance of each unit in the progression.

Winter 2023

Term B Textbooks and Practice Books for Years 2, 4 and 5 will be dispatched to arrive in school in the first week of January. Year 1, Year 3 and Year 6 will be dispatched to arrive in school before Christmas.

We have prioritised Year 1 because there are slightly fewer lessons in Term A and some classes will be moving through the content faster than others. We have prioritised Year 6 to support teachers in covering the curriculum content in advance of SATs.

We have added our new Rekenrek tool into ActiveLearn Primary. You can find it in the following three places:

  • In the existing Power Maths toolkit in the Power Maths resources section.
  • It is a new standalone tool in the Power Maths resources section.
  • It has been added to six Power Maths units in the Year 1/Year 2 planning area so that it appears in the ‘Teaching Tools in this unit’ box in the unit planning.

For those of you not sure what Rekenrek is, below is an example:

We have added a file for Word Problems and a file for Challenge Cards to Power Maths on ActiveLearn Primary. These can be found under 'Problem-Solving and Reasoning' on the 'Resources WRM Edition' tile on ActiveLearn Primary.

More information on the Challenge Cards:

An important part of maths mastery is keeping the class together working on the same topic, and not moving on from that topic until all children are secure. We know it's always been a challenge to know what to do with children who 'get it' quickly. Power Maths users sometimes ask us what to do with children who complete the independent work before everyone else. The advice is always to ask stretching questions without moving on to, e.g., the objectives for the following year's programme of study.

The cards are a solution. You can print the cards for each unit and give them to fast finishers to do independently. They are 'low threshold, high ceiling' tasks with Towards, Securing and Deeper content on each card which stops children from getting stuck, but does provide stretch for higher attainers. The teacher notes provide further stretch questions you can ask children (and also support tips), which a TA could easily use.

More information on the Word Problems:

You can use these flexibly.

For any curriculum objective you've got a range of questions at Towards, Securing and Deeper level. You could cut them out and stick them in children's exercise books. You could also snip from the PDF and display them on the board.

These could also be used for fast finishers, or to check before teaching if children are confident, and to check a week or two after teaching if children remember what they've learnt!
